Looking to Reverse the Trend of the Non-Contact ACL-Tear Epidemic

As a strength coach, there are certain things you can do to reduce the risk of ACL tears within your scope of practice.
- How to alter or add in exercises in your training sessions to decrease the risk of ACL tear. Some common exercises that we do to strengthen muscles may have an unintended consequence of targeting a muscle that may increase the risk of tear.
- How to alter or add in exercises in your warm up to decrease the risk of ACL tear. With the addition or change of a few exercises to work with different receptors within the body, you can improve the firing patterns that has been shown by the research to reduce the risk of ACL tear.
- How to gain additional information from testing that is already done as a part of many programs (or the combine) to see who is at a greater risk. Coaches are dealing with a paucity of time to work with the athletes and don’t need additional screenings or tests that take away time from training. We will look at a few methods to be able to utilize info from common tests and combine them with others to see what athlete is at the greatest risk of suffering a tear.
Dr. Bryan Mann
Dr. Bryan Mann is currently an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences at the University of Miami. He has been in the field of strength & conditioning at the college level since 1998. He has coached at Southwest Missouri State University, Arizona State University, University of Tulsa and the University of Missouri. He had the fortune of working with some athletes who went on to be professional athletes and Olympians. Mann is most well known for his popularization of various methods of autoregulation of training such as velocity based training and the autoregulatory progressive resistance exercise protocol.
Through these methods athletes are able to see rapid increases in strength and power by progressing at their own rates of adaptation. Mann has been involved in researching different aspects of athletic performance beyond just strength and power with his publication “The effects of academic stress on illness and injury in division 1 football,” where they found the likelihood of injury for a starter was actually higher during an academically stressful week as compared to training camp. Mann has been all over the world speaking on these topics and his talents have been utilized by multiple professional sporting organizations in consulting on velocity based training and other topics.

Dr. Ken Clark
Dr. Ken Clark is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at West Chester University (WCU), joining the WCU faculty in the Fall 2015 Semester. Ken teaches Biomechanics and Kinetic Anatomy at the undergraduate level, and teaches Motor Learning at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Ken’s research interests include the mechanical factors underlying athletic performance and injury mechanisms, and he has special expertise in speed and agility development. Ken has peer-reviewed publications in journals such as the Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Experimental Biology, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, and the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research.
In addition to teaching and conducting research, Ken has over a decade of strength & conditioning coaching experience. He has coached in the private sector (Summit Sports Training Center), the high school level (Dallas Jesuit Prep), and in the collegiate setting (Dickinson College and Haverford College). Starting in 2017, Ken has worked with the sprinters on the WCU Track and Field team, and has also been a biomechanics consultant for USA Track and Field. Ken has certifications from the NSCA, USA-Weightlifting, and USA Track & Field.
Ken received his PhD in Applied Physiology and Biomechanics from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 2014, where he was mentored by Dr. Peter Weyand. Ken completed his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology at West Chester University in 2009. Ken completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Swarthmore College in 2003, where he was a two-time All-Conference running back for the football team.

This session will discuss the latest research around protein ingestion and its impact on muscle health and performance. His lab uses stable isotope labeled amino acid tracers, and various other molecular techniques, for the in vivo measurement of whole body and muscle protein turnover in a human model.

Dr. Burd’s area of research interest is exercise physiology. Our research group investigates the effects of nutritional and exercise manipulations on the regulation of muscle mass and changes in body composition with aging, disease, and the athlete. We use stable isotope labeled amino acid tracers, and various other molecular techniques, for the in vivo measurement of whole body and muscle protein turnover in a human model. The knowledge gained from this work is used to define nutritional and exercise strategies to improve muscle health and performance.

An in depth look at this newly discovered human organ and how it plays an important role in training the high-level athlete.
Bill has done an extensive review of the literature and personally interviewed some of the top people in the world on fascia training, including; Thom Myers, Stuart McGill and Dan Pfaff. It is now shown that appropriate fascia tissue training can increase performance and prevent injury.
Bill Parisi is a 1990 graduate of Iona College with a degree in Business Administration. He was selected as a two time NCAA Division 1 Track & Field All American and 1988 United States Olympic Trails Qualifier in the Javelin Throw. Saddled with $50,000 dollars in student loan debt, Bill founded the Parisi Speed School in 1992 out of a $500 van. He has grown the Parisi Program to over 100 locations across the globe by helping club owners tap into the 7 billion dollar sports performance training market. His locations have collectively trained over 650,000 youth athletes that continue to spread the company mission of developing a positive character in youth regardless of their athletic ability or economic status.
Dr. Findley completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota under the guidance of FJ Kottke, MD PhD, one of the founders of that field. He earned his PhD in physical medicine, and received state of the art training in physical therapy, exercise physiology, psychology, and anthropology. He has extensive training in complementary medicine and is an active clinician (Certified Advanced Rolfer™) as well as a researcher at the VA Medical Center East Orange NJ which is a member of the Planetree Network of hospitals incorporating integrative medicine. He is the Founder of the Fascia Research Congress, and served as CEO and executive director from its inception in 2007 through 2013.
As a physiatrist he treats many disorders of the musculoskeletal system. As a scientist he strives to understand their pathophysiology to develop focused treatments and prophylactic regimens. Fascia, part of the connective tissues that permeate the human body, may be the unifying structure and concept that is essential to elucidate the mechanisms of these dysfunctions.
The links between fascia and cancer were proposed more than 100 years ago by AT Still, the founder of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Findley is the recipient of the prestigious 2009 Northup Award from the American Osteopathic Association for his paper Three-Dimensional Mathematical Model for Deformation of Human Fasciae in Manual Therapy.

Phil Wagner, MD
Phil spent 8 years as a strength & conditioning coach at University of California Berkeley and University of California Los Angeles, including 3 National Championships, as well as a performance coach for the Canterbury Crusaders and the New South Wales Waratahs (professional rugby teams in New Zealand and Australia). Following his coaching career, he graduated medical school as a physician from University of Southern California, focused on studying biomechanics at their School of Physical Therapy’s Biokinesiology Lab. Dr. Wagner founded Sparta Performance Science in the Silicon Valley as a facility to directly measure and enhance performance alongside athlete resilience to injury. This business evolved to include a larger technology business, Sparta Software Corporation (est. 2012), which provides an athlete data management platform to establish evidence based practices within sports organizations.
